Your Treasure is Within: March Events

Our Alive in All Seasons program is alive and well at Juniper Village. This quarter’s seasonal theme is on Creative Expression: “Explore Your Creativity” and serves to promote our philosophy of encouraging an active body, an engaged mind and a fulfilled spirit. For March, we will turn our focus to Performance: “Your Treasure is Within”.

This month on March 2, 2014 we look forward to the 86th celebration of the Academy Awards. As we watch popular comedian and talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres host the festivities while the beautiful stars dressed in their finery walk the red carpet we can’t help to stop, to pause and reminisce of all of the great performances of past years. Katherine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Marlon Brando, Robert DeNiro, Tom Hanks, Jack Nicholson, Vivien Leigh, Meryl Streep, Peter Ustinov and Dustin Hoffman; the list goes on! In addition to guessing who might win the Oscars for 2014, this month we will be learning about and experiencing all different types of great performance art, enjoying cultural events and trying our hand at acting in drama club.

It’s going to be a theatrical month at Juniper Village at Meadville filled with creativity, great experiences and memorable performances! You are cordially invited to attend a performance by Magician Vance McCarthy on March 2nd at 2:00 pm, our Night at the Oscars Dinner on March 13th at 5:30 pm (RSVP by March 11th), our St. Patty’s Pub and Grub Party with Z Entertainment on March 19th at 4:00 pm, our Birthday Bash with guitarist Kenton Kovich on March 26th at 2:00 pm, or any of our other activities (see our Newsletter for a complete listing).

So come in, and join in on the act to find that “Your Treasure is Within”.

Week 3 Evokes Artistic Expression Beyond our Expectations!

Week 3 evoked the creative artist in everyone!  Finished pieces will be on display at the Art show reception on February 21st at 3pm, and then following will continue to make an appearance in the community for friends and families to boast throughout the month of February.
Tami Hrizay, instructor,  adds: “Today we talked about Monochromatic colors.  Resident Artists created visions of the images they would put to brush strokes.  Then . . . the magic began . . .
I helped the artists mix colors and offered brief snippets of instruction, then stepped back to allow imaginations to unfold.  Images appeared—took on shape, form and color.
Sunsets, lighthouses, storms and beach scenes came into being.  Smiles emerged causing my own.  It was a good day.”
We can all hardly wait to see how week 4 unfolds!

Art Month: Awaken Your Passion!

Tami Hrizay continues to be amazed at the growth in her art class attendees.  The Residents of Juniper Village at Meadville had some hidden and long lost talent that is now coming to light!  Tami mentions “The history of acrylic paints and using this medium were the themes.  Each student chose their own creative paths.  We problem-solved as we painted.  The artists produced landscapes and images of home, of all kinds!  Tiny miracles happened and one dim light was rekindled.  Hope was reborn and memories cherished.”

Week three’s paint is dry and the brushes are poised for week four.  Look for the upcoming post of week 3!  Remember the Art show reception on Friday, February 21st at 3pm.  This is open to the community and some of our local artists will be present to talk about their work!

Art Month

Residents gathered for the kick off class of the art workshop series by Tami Hritzay.  Tami will be teaching a series of classes each Wednesday during the month of February, Art Month!  Perhaps it is said best in the words of the teacher herself:

“Wow, where do I begin?  I love to teach art and spire others to create.  God has blessed everyone with a gift of creativity. In our first class, I introduced Egg Tempra—showcasing Andrew Weyth, one of my favorite artists.  I shared art history relating to Egg Tempra.  Then . . . onward to paint!  I always encourage my students to think independently.  I teach “technique” and encourage their own unique style to emerge.  The awesome paintings that were produced, positive comments shared and boosted morale observed were more than rewarding.” Tami Hritzay.

The Juniper family appreciates Tami and her continued involvement in our Connections Activities programs.  We look forward to next weeks lesson!  Interested in joining in on the next class?  Call 333.4400 to RSVP.  Classes are Wednesdays at 9:30 am during February.

OH!! Manicures and making friends

Volunteer Marilyn has been making memories with Residents at Juniper Village while participating in Morning Spa! A special tradition was created when Connections Director Wendy Vaugh thought to combine the following amenities: Beauty shop day with chair massages and manicures. VOILA! Spa day was born. Annually, Juniper had been offering the Chocolate Spa day to residents around Mother's Day and it was so well received, the tradition continues in a more traditional format every first and third Tuesday of the month from 8am-noon.

Resident Marilyn Stallard enjoys a manicure and the friendly connection she has established. Juniper Village at Meadville proudly stays connected with the community at large and thanks our special volunteer Marilyn for her dedication to our residents.
