Almost ready for bottling!

The Strawberry Merlot has been syphoned and the wine has been "working its magic" in the carboy for the last week. The Residents of Juniper Village are preparing to bottle some 25-30 bottles of wine during the next wine making class with Rich Pittner from Windy Hill Wine making. Residents, family members and friends of Juniper Village enjoy the weekly Friday happy hours at 2:30pm. Whether they come for the companionship, tasty surprises, or the Alive in All Seasons Themed focus, fun is had by all! Soon the patience will pay off as we toast to the delicious Strawberry Merlot that has been cultivated by our very own residents. Oh, and I am sure we can pair it with a savory smoked Gouda or aged cheddar! Guests are always welcome to inquire about signing up for any one of our educational series including the next wine making series. A list of education seminars will soon be available. What's with all the Red Hats?

What is the Red Hat Society and what is it doing at Juniper Village? Why, celebrating National Assisted Living week in style, of course!

"The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humor and elan. We believe silliness is the comedy relief of life, and since we are all in it together, we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together. Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next."
- Sue Ellen Cooper, Queen Mother

To learn more about the Red Hat Society please visit http://www.redhatsociety.com/.

Juniper Villages own Red Hat Society celebrated Assisted Living week with a fabulous luncheon. They dined on a delicious lunch prepared by Chef Erin and the culinary assistants, and a Flourless Chocolate Cake prepared by Chef Erin and Mandy Maruska, Community Relations. The cake is somewhere between the consistency of cheesecake and the inside of a truffle. Definitely a dessert fit for a Red Hat queen! Following dinner the residents enjoyed an aromatic exploration of holistic products, herbal teas, lotions, and soothing mists all compliments of Leslie Blake, certified herbalist. Jennifer Musone, Connections Director, once again, hosted another fulfilling and enriching community event. Other Red Hat Society members are welcome to hold an event at Juniper Village. Our ladies would welcome the opportunity. Please reach out to Jennifer Musone at 333.4400 to schedule your next Red Hat Ladies Event!

Still Spry at 95!

Happy 95th Birthday Paul Reese! Family, Friends, Residents, and staff gathered at Juniper Village on Saturday night in celebration of Paul's Milestone. The surprise planning was kept secret. Paul's remarks were witty as usual as he jested staff that he was very surprised that they were able to keep the secret! Paul was most touched by the effort his family put into planning the event. The cake was beautiful, the ice cream tasty, and the matching plates and napkins were a fantastic touch! He takes a moment to pause and reflect on the celebration. Paul's sense of humor and gentile nature has not only enhanced other residents lives, but has been an inspiration to staff as well. Thank you, Paul, for your humor, your kindness and your joy of life! It is our joy to Nurture your Spirit of Life!Posted by Picasa

What's brewing?

Residents Jean Wood and Lucille Echnoz take a moment to sniff out the progress in the wine making class held at Juniper Village. "Smells like Bread!" someone chimed in. Rich Pittner from Windy Hill Wine making stopped by the Lafayette Tavern again last week for one of the final steps prior to bottling the delicious Strawberry Merlot. Residents tasted a few samples of wine in order to vote on how sweet the wine they are brewing should be. Some like it dry. It's a matter of preference, and our folk's like it sweet! Funneling the wine into the carboy was interesting. We learned that keeping all of the equipment in the process sterile was the key to safe and healthy wine making. We look forward to bottling the wine in the next few weeks and sharing a toast at Happy Hour on Fridays at 2:30pm. Thank you, Rich, for another great educational addition to our connections program. Demonstrating our Green Canopy Program

Is it Christmas already? No, that’s Chef Erin demonstrating how Juniper Village recycles their cardboard, paper, plastics and glass under the Green Canopy Program. Juniper Village purchases products when ever possible, with reduced packaging. However, at times we are left with bulky cardboards and packing materials. During Environmental month, Juniper Village gave away travel coffee mugs to the community. The boxes pictured have been saved for recycling in the connections program for an activity. The minute Jennifer Musone, Connections Director, saw the shipment of mugs and the extra packaging, she instantly chimed in with a repurpose for the boxes. Great teamwork, Jennifer and Erin! The Juniper Spirit is evident in your efforts to reduce our environmental impact.Posted by Picasa

Friendship is Blooming

New Residents Dorris Smock and Lucille Echnoz take a moment to admire the flower arrangement they created together. The flowers were product of the nurturing family that Lucy raised. The lavender gladiolas were planted by Lucy in the spring. Lucy gave the seedlings for the Chrysanthemums to her daughter, who sprouted them at her home and brought them to Lucy on Mother's day this year. Lucy planted the flowers in her own garden in June, and by her August birthday, they were blooming! September we celebrate Friendship month at Juniper Village. Please join Lucy and Dorris and all the Residents, Family and Staff on September 26th from 11:30am to 1:30pm at our 7th annual Friends and Family Picnic on the Juniper Front Lawn!

In order to Nurture the Spirit of Life in each of our Residents, Juniper Village at Meadville’s Environmental Services Director, Clay Erford and Director of Operations, Don Breneman lend a hand to build one of the several raised garden boxes that will be a part of Juniper Village at Meadville’s Garden Project. The project sprouted up last fall when Connections Director Jennifer Musone was approached by Allegheny College Student Nikki Cash, regarding a senior project idea. What started out as a small seed has blossomed into a wonderful community project. “Nikki’s presentation proved to far exceed our expectations” says Jennifer Musone. Representatives from local businesses, churches and organizations have graciously offered to support the project over the next few months. Did you know that gardening provides the weight-bearing motions that help build strong bones and muscles? The residents of Juniper Village will continue their journey in maintaining an Active Body, Engaged Mind, and Fulfilled Spirit.
